Royal Purple NSRA Winged Sprintcars Head North To Western Speedway For P&R Truck Centres Daffodil Cup

By Ben Deatherage

Victoria, British Columbia- After a little bit of time off the Royal Purple NSRA Winged Sprints are back in action for a doubleheader weekend north of the border on Friday, August 11th, and Saturday, the 12th.  The series heads to Victoria, British Columbia, located on gorgeous and scenic Vancouver Island, for the historic Daffodil Cup, presented by P&R Truck Centres, at the famed Western Speedway.  It is one of the most prestigious races in all of western Canada.

2017 already has been a great season with the Royal Purple NSRA Winged Sprintcars.  British Columbian Aaron Willison is coming off of an incredible win at the Rory Price Memorial, at Evergreen Speedway, on July 29th.  Bryan Warf, Tony Thomas, and Kyle Alberding all have won once this season.

Locally at Western Speedway the 4/10-mile oval has hosted four local Winged Sprint Car races.  Jeff Montgomery, the 2017 Winged Super Sprint champion, has two wins and so does Duane Zeinstra.

“The Daffodil Cup began with Geoff Vantreight,” said longtime Pacific Northwest track promoter, George Wade, “he owned a huge Daffodil farm and his cars were always the yellow #7 and they were called the Daffodil Special. Geoff stepped up and sponsored the first Daffodil Cup race in 1961.”

Of the forty-three-previous completed events there have been twenty-four different winners while a Canadian driver has won twenty-four times. Of the last ten races the Canadian contingent has dominated winning seven while the Americans have visited victory lane three times.  The last five years have witnessed five different winners on the final night.

Scott Aumen has accumulated the most Daffodil Cup wins, at five, after finishing first in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2013.  Roy Smith and Jeff Montgomery are second on the win chart with four Cup triumphs. Craig Deaver and Norm Ellefson all have managed to win this race three times.

The list of two-time winners includes Billy Foster, Doug Larson, Don McLeod, Eldon Rassmussen, and Trevor Montgomery. Fourteen drivers have one Daffodil Cup win to their credit and they are Andy Alberding, Blain Sneva, Bud Gorder, Cory Lockwood, Dave Fitzgerald, Davey Hamilton, Jim Malloy, John Tharp, Marty White, Rebel Jackson Jr., Rick Brown, Ron Larson, Sierra Jackson, and Vern Church.

Jeff Montgomery is the defending race winner while Eldon Rassmussen was victorious in the first edition way back in 1961.  While the race was started in the 1960’s there were times when it unfortunately was not ran.  However, it has been held every year since 1999.  Craig Deaver (2000-02) and Jeff Montgomery (2004-06) are tied with most consecutive Daffodil Cup won.
